School and After School Caretaking

All kids in the compulsory educative age and living in the Municipality District of Aalborg have a right to attend one of the municipality’s 50 public schools.

Enrollment

The adress listed in your child’s National Register of Persons determines the school he or she belongs to. This school is referred to as the district school. Your child always has the right to attend the district school if there is or will be established a class of the preferred form. Otherwise, your child will be appointed to a different school.

When you wish to enroll your child in school, you have to contact the child’s district school.

You can get information on what school is your child’s district school by contacting the Department of Education and Cultural Affairs at the municipality.

Free choice of school

In principle there is a free choice of school in Denmark, which is why you can have your child enrolled in a school other than the district school if there is open placements in the preferred school.

If you wish to enroll your child in another school than the district school, you must contact the school you prefer. The school will consider your request accordingly.

When must a child start in school

In Denmark there is 10 years of compulsory education. As a rule, all kids enroll in preschool when they turn 6.

Your child can enroll in school earlier if he or she turns 5 before October 1 and is expected to be able to follow class teaching. Your child can also enroll later if he or she is not ready to start at 6. If so, your child will then start when he or she turns 7.
